Welcome to my little site. Here’s a bit of information about me and this blog.

Who am I and why am I doing this blog?

I would consider myself to be an “applied scientist” – I’m a scientist who doesn’t do a whole lot of research these days, but rather takes research done by others and uses it to solve real-world problems. I have degrees in the fields of biology, engineering and medical science, and at least some post-secondary experience in most major fields of science and many non-science subjects, so I like to thing I have a fairly well-rounded science background. I’m a partner in a small consulting firm, and also have a family, so I don’t have huge amounts of time to devote to this site (i.e. don’t expect multiple updates each day or for me to respond instantly to any comments).

I’ve thought for a long time that it would be nice to have an outlet for my thoughts on various topics, so I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while. I’m also a pretty strong advocate of education, and in particular quality education about science and critical thought, so if anyone learns anything from my posts I’ll be happy.

Why the pseudonym and what does it mean?

I decided to go with a pseudonym mainly because of my role as a consultant. Since it wouldn’t be much fun doing a blog without taking a controversial or contentious stance once in a while, I am keeping my online persona separate from my professional identity. I don’t plan on going to great lengths to keep my identity secret or anything (and some people who read this might know me in real life) – I just want to keep a bit of separation. The name itself doesn’t really mean anything.

What is this site about?

My plan (such as it is) is to use this site mainly to post short essays on topics of interest to me – probably mostly science-related, though there’s always the chance I’ll delve into politics or other subjects on occasion.  The most common topics will probably be toxicology and chemical exposure, since they’re related to my own areas of expertise. I’m sure it will evolve as time goes on though. I’m not really expecting a huge readership, particularly since I don’t have the time for daily updates.

Comments are welcome, so long as they are civil. You are welcome to disagree with me, so long as there are no personal attacks.
